Photographing the beauty of the world: that’s what Marko Dimitrijevic has wanted to do since he was a teenager, when he spent an entire summer working towards buying his first SLR camera.Originally from Yugoslavia, Marko taught himself photography on the field during and following his extensive formal education and subsequent business career.
Having spent more than 35 years traveling the globe as an entrepreneur and investor, Marko Dimitrijevic is widely recognized as a pioneer in the emerging markets investing. In 2016, Marko published his first book Frontier Investor: How to Prosper in the Next Emerging Markets, which Tony Robbins hailed as “A brilliant and entertaining book that teaches the why, how, and where to invest in the new emerging markets. Marko Dimitrijevic is the grand master of frontier markets investing.”
As Marko conducted on-the-ground due diligence around the world, with his work taking him to various continents, he spent his free time capturing the beauty of his surroundings. With his camera and reading materials always in tow, Marko learned the art—and discipline—of photography.
Marko Dimitrijevic attended the Faculty of Business and Economics at the University of Lausanne in Switzerland, acquired Swiss citizenship in his early 20s, then went on to earn an MBA from Stanford University. Marko subsequently traveled to more than 100 countries, shaping both his business and photography style. Marko has noted that there’s a symmetry in his two passions: good pictures, like good investments, don’t happen with luck but require many hours of diligence, analysis, and grueling work.
Throughout Marko’s successful investment career, he has been a pioneer. And this identity of pioneer and frontiersman has carried over into his photography work as well. The term frontier is one that is essential to Marko’s work and personal life. As one of the world’s foremost emerging markets experts, Marko Dimitrijevic has over 35 years of professional investing experience in frontier markets. Marko has invested in over 120 emerging or frontier markets, and he was one of the earliest Western investors in China, Russia, Indonesia, Bangladesh, and Saudi Arabia.
With a driven business acumen that has taken him around the world many times over, and with an artistic sensibility that has been described as eclectic, Marko continues to set himself apart as a renaissance man. His photography influences include the masters of the trade like Stephen Frink, Amos Nachoum, Paul Nicklen, Michael Poliza, Galen Rowell, Sebastiao Salgado and Steve Winter. Over the years, he’s gravitated towards wildlife photography and underwater wildlife in particular. Entrenched in the beauty of nature, Marko has found solace in photographing endangered species, a privilege he believes as important as is it fascinating.
As a photographer, Marko Dimitrijevic is honored to have his work published in numerous magazines including Alert Diver, American Photo, Photopro, Islands, Seacam, and Showboats International. And as a writer, Marko is proud to have been contributed articles about entrepreneurship, investing and photography to publications like The Next Web, Thrive Global, and AlleyWatch.
